Weekend Project Idea: DIY White Decor

July 23, 2012

I loved Brit’s posts last week focusing on how to dress using the color white! White has always been a favorite color of mine and I love both wearing it and using it in my home decor. She was so right when she described it as “simple” and “eloquent”. It just makes you feel clean and alive! And every DIYer should have (at least) one can of white spray paint in their bag of tricks! The possibilities are endless! Here are just a few weekend project ideas using white spray paint. We’d love to hear your DIY projects using white!

White on White
There’s nothing more striking than white on white. Grab some decorative frames from Goodwill, give ‘em a quick sand and then spray paint them white. Empty white frames look good on almost any color wall, but really make a statement on crisp white walls. (Click photo to read original blog post.) Read the rest of this entry ?

Quick and Easy Refurbishing Idea!

June 6, 2012

While searching for a summer savings project have you ever seen a piece of furniture at Goodwill, a yard sale or even tossed on the side of the road that makes you think to yourself, ” This is great, but I’m not sure if it could ever look new again..”?

Well, my friend Rachel stumbled upon this same situation with a cabinet she spotted on the side of the road! And guess what , she found a quick and easy way to breathe new life in to it!

Check it out!

An astonishing transformation from the drab, beaten-up wooden chest of drawers, huh! If purchased new it’d be at least $200 dollars, what a great summer savings project!

Rachel’s Refurbishing Project required:

  • Old chest of drawers
  • Sandpaper
  • Glue
  • Paint
  • New knobs

And the kicker, the crafty trick, which provided the backbone to the entire transformation…..

Textured Wallpaper!

Ingenious, huh?! The wallpaper provides texture, depth and pattern, all qualities which are subtle, yet result in an entire new look for the piece!

How she did it:

  1. Rachel removed the cabinet handles
  2. She then sanded down the entire piece
  3. Measurements for the face of the cabinets were taken. The textured wall paper was then cut out to scale and glued to the face of the cabinets
  4. The entire piece, including the new cabinet faces, was painted
  5. New knob were screwed in

Voila, proof that you can turn [almost] anything from drab to fab with a little elbow grease and creativity!

Thanks for sharing with us Rachel!

Do you have any crafty summer savings project, we’d love to share!

Jewelry Frames – Art for your Accessories!

March 18, 2012

Or accessories for your art! Whichever you prefer, here is an easy and stylish idea to organize your earrings, necklaces and other jewelry pieces!

What you need:

  • A frame (or frames) from Goodwill
  • Coordinating scrapbook paper
  • Screen (from an old window screen or you can purchase a roll from any home improvement store like Lowes or Home Depot)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Adhesive – whatever you have lying around the house
  • Nails

How to:

  1. Prep the frame(s). Wipe off the surface and remove the backing of the frame including the glass – save this stuff for another project. If your frames are different colors, sand and paint them all to match.
  2. Cut pieces of screen to fit the inside of the frame – make sure you have extra screen to attach to the frame.
  3. Hot glue the screen to the inside of the frame, where the glass would sit. Try to keep the screen as tight as possible.
  4. Cut the pieces of scrapbooking paper to fit the outside (back) of the frame. Again, make sure you add extra paper to cover the whole back.
  5. Adhere the scrapbook paper to the back of the frame… I used packaging tape because it’s what I had lying around and I wanted something semi-permanent so I could change the look in the future.
  6. Hammer the nails onto the frame for extra “storage”.
  7. Hang on the wall and display your beautiful jewelry!

This project can usually be completed in a couple of hours one evening – depending on if you have to paint the frames or not. Have fun creating and let us know if you have any suggestions or other ideas!

Thanks for reading!
